IEC 2025 Mathematics Awards: Recognized scientific and academic talent in Catalonia

The Mathematics Awards of the Sant Jordi awards poster of the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) are a clear commitment to promoting scientific and academic talent in Catalonia. Through awards organized by the Catalan Society of Mathematics (SCM), a subsidiary of the IEC, the Section of Sciences and Technology, and the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Foundation (FFSB), also linked to the IEC, the commitment to quality mathematical research, scientific dissemination, and recognition of young talent in mathematics is reaffirmed.

Winners and Recognitions 2025

This year, the awardees in mathematics were as follows.

Albert Dou Award: Mathematical Dissemination

The Albert Dou Prize 2025 has been awarded to Jaume Aguadé for her work Analysis of a Rubik-type puzzle. A pretext to talk about modeling, geometry, computation and programming. Starting from an everyday problem, Aguadé combines various mathematical areas such as geometry, group theory, and computation, achieving an excellent dissemination work. This award recognizes tasks that contribute to making mathematics visible beyond the academic sphere.Albert Dou Award of the Catalan Society of Mathematics.

Have obtained ex aequo mentions the works:

The monodromy conjecture for non-degenerate Newton hypersurfaces by’Oriol Baeza Guasch
Application of Fourier series on S^2 to approximate star-shaped surfaces of Miguel Nasarre Budiño.

Regarding Baeza's work, the jury highlights the effort of clarification and synthesis on the monodromy conjecture, as well as the writing effort. Regarding Nasarre's work, it highlights the quality and clarity of the exposition of the mathematical results used, as well as the clear, methodical, and detailed development of the calculations necessary for the creation of the graphic software that he developed and made public on github.

This award highlights the potential and excellence of new talents in mathematics.

IEC Mathematics Award of the SECCT

The IEC Mathematics Award, in honor of the mathematician and astronomer Assumpció Català i Poch, is called every three years to distinguish the excellence of doctoral theses in mathematics (defended in the last five years) and is awarded by the Section of Sciences and Technology of the IEC.

The IEC Mathematics Award 2025 has been awarded to Robert Cardona for his doctoral thesis: The geometry and topology of stationary Euler flows, integrability, and singular geometric structures, defended in 2021, within the framework of the UPC doctoral program, supervised by Eva Miranda.

Also awarded were honorable mentions to:

  • Mar Giralt, for the doctoral thesis Homoclinic and chaotic phenomena in L3_3 in the restricted three-body problem, read in 2022, within the framework of the UPC doctoral program, supervised by Inma Baldomà and Marcel Guàrdia.
  • Clara Torres, for the doctoral thesis Regularity theory for obstacle problems and Harnack inequalities at the boundary, read in 2024, within the framework of the UB doctoral program, supervised by Xavier Ros Oton.

Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Foundation Awards (FFSB)

  • Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize: This award recognizes an original and unpublished mathematical monograph.

  • Mathematics and Society Prize: Awarded by the FFSB to encourage the presence of mathematics in the media.

  • Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Grants: Financial grants for mathematical research aimed at researchers in training.

A commitment to mathematical research and scientific dissemination

The IEC Mathematics Awards not only recognize young talent and excellence in research, but also the task of disseminating mathematics in an accessible way to society. From the’IEC, the SCM and the FFSB, we continue to bet on the visibility of quality mathematical research at national and international levels.
