Other scientific activities

In addition to the Barcelona Mathematical Days congress and meetings with other international scientific societies, the SCM organizes, co-organizes, promotes, and supports other scientific and academic activities. 

Some have a cross-cutting interest for all members, while others focus on a specific area. They also vary from an international scope to a Catalan or SCM-specific one. Furthermore, some of these activities have historical continuity, while others are inherently one-time events.

Also included here are activities that have received support from the SCM through the Activity Promotion Fund. 

By way of example, we list some of the activities held at the Institute of Catalan Studies, which showcase different profiles.

Conferences and congresses

  • The annual BARCCSYN congress, at the Institute of Catalan Studies, which since 2023 has been organized in collaboration with the Catalan Society of Biology and the Catalan Society of Mathematics.
  • Registrations for the School of History of Mathematics 2025 are now open Catalan Dynamical Systems Conference, since 2016, during which the prize is awarded Barcelona Dynamical Systems Prize. 
  • The Mathematical Meeting. This activity had significant impact within the SCM for many years. It was the SCM's annual scientific meeting and included scientific talks and debates about the reality of our community and its connections abroad. The last one, the 18th Mathematical Meeting, was held in 2015, and discussed voting systems and game theory.

Institutional events and meetings

  • Institutional reception for Mr. Nuno Crato, president of the Portuguese Mathematical Society (2011-2015), at the Institute of Catalan Studies, February 2025
  • Institutional reception for Mr. Kristian Seip, president of the Norwegian Mathematical Society (2003-2007), at the Institute of Catalan Studies, May 2024. 
  • Institutional reception for Mr. Etienne Ghys, permanent secretary of the French Academy of Sciences, at the Institute of Catalan Studies, May 3, 2023.
  • «Abel in Barcelona». The Abel Committee is the scientific committee that awards the Abel Prize in Mathematics each year. This committee meets physically three times a year, and its last meeting was held in Norway. In 2016, when Professor Marta Sanz-Solé was a member, the meeting took place at the Institute of Catalan Studies. The IEC (with support from the SCM) and the Norwegian consulate in Barcelona hosted the event.
