Luis Caffarelli has received the 2023 Abel Prize for his work on partial differential equations. The prize committee highlighted his fundamental contributions to the regularity theory of nonlinear equations, including free boundary problems and the Monge-Ampère equation.
The Argentine-born mathematician, aged 74, is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin and has worked with Catalan mathematicians such as Xavier Ros Oton, Joaquim Serra, and especially Xavier Cabré, with whom he published a book in 1995 that has become a classic in the field.
Caffarelli delivered the inaugural lecture of the Poincaré course (2003-04) at the Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics of the UPC.
