Next Saturday, October 21, 2023, the XVIII Joint Conference on Mathematics Education will be held in Castelló. This is the main annual event where all the entities from the Catalan Countries working for mathematics education gather to discuss a current teaching topic: SCM, FEEMCAT, SBM.XEIX, and SEMCV-“Al Khwarizmi”, which is the host this year.
The thematic focus of this conference will be “Computational thinking in mathematics education,” which is introduced for the first time as a specific competency in the new Spanish mathematics curriculum.
Understanding problem-solving as the main method for learning mathematics, explicit mention is made of the possibilities that computational thinking opens up to expand our problem-solving capacity. Computational thinking shares common ground with existing areas of mathematics education, such as data analysis and logical structuring, but also opens up options for working on the representation and communication of one's own ideas, which should be understandable by both humans and machines.
