Joan Girbau i Badó was a great mathematician and a great person who was a driving force and engine of the SCM. He was its president from 1986 to 1990. From the SCM, he promoted contact and agreements with mathematical societies around the world. As a professor at the UAB he was the creator of the research group in differential geometry and a source of inspiration and greatly loved by his students, colleagues, and collaborators.
From the SCM, we wish to pay him a deep tribute and express our condolences to his family and friends.
We encourage you to read the conversation between Joan Girbau and Manuel Castellet in the Notícies 50 as well as the recent (re)publication of his book Differential Geometry and Relativity, which brought him great joy.
As he mentions, whether measured by the L2 norm or the supremum norm, he was a great mathematician and an example for all, thank you.
