School of History of Mathematics 2025: registrations open
From October 8 to 10, 2025, A Coruña will host the first School of History of Mathematics, under the direction of professor Maria Rosa Massa. Registrations can now be formalized.
Objectives of the School of History of Mathematics 2025
The’School of History of Mathematics 2025 is born with a clear intention: to present the most recent research in the history of mathematics and to show how this discipline can become a useful tool for teaching. The meeting combines two complementary dimensions: research training and didactic application in the classroom.
This initiative is especially designed for young researchers in the history of mathematics who wish to deepen their training through lectures and exchanges with specialists. At the same time, it also aims to reach mathematics teachers interested in introducing the historical dimension as a pedagogical resource, a trend that is increasingly attracting interest in the field of mathematics education.
Catalan leadership at the School of History of Mathematics 2025
One of the most relevant aspects of this first edition is that the direction of the School of History of Mathematics 2025 is in Catalan hands. The person in charge is Maria Rosa Massa-Esteve, emeritus professor of Applied Mathematics at the UPC, president of the History Commission of the Spanish Committee of Mathematics and representative of the Catalan Society of Mathematics (SCM).
The fact that an academic figure linked to the SCM holds the direction of this initiative is a clear sign of the presence and leadership of Catalan mathematics at the state and international level. Massa will share the direction with Alfonso Gordaliza (University of Valladolid) and will have the collaboration of scientific secretary Eduardo Dorrego, PhD in history of mathematics.
Program and activities of the School of History of Mathematics 2025
The program of the’School of History of Mathematics 2025 combines master sessions and practical workshops. The inauguration will be led by the management team and the director of the Galician branch of the UIMP. Immediately after, Maria Rosa Massa will give the opening lecture on the transformation of mathematical thought from the geometric to the algebraic model.
Over three days, participants will have access to lectures by renowned experts such as Mónica Blanco (UPC), Antonio Durán (University of Seville), Guillermo Curbera (University of Seville) or Davide Crippa (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic). The topics covered range from the origins of analytical geometry to the arithmetization of analysis, passing through figures such as Euler, Newton or Leibniz.
In addition, practical workshops will be held, focused on the use of historical texts and the creation of didactic activities for the classroom. This applied dimension allows attendees not only to learn about academic research, but also to acquire resources for their own teaching practice.
Who the School of History of Mathematics 2025 is for
The School is open to diverse profiles within the mathematical community. On the one hand, it is aimed at young researchers who want to consolidate their training in the history of mathematics. On the other hand, it is designed for secondary school and university teachers who wish to enrich their teaching methods by incorporating historical examples and narratives that make mathematics more accessible and motivating.
It is also a space open to all those interested in learning about the historical development of mathematical ideas and understanding how they can dialogue with current research and education.

The importance of Catalan participation.
The participation of the
in this initiative, through the direction of Maria Rosa Massa, is a sign of the Catalan Society of Mathematics involvement of the Catalan mathematical community in activities with state and international projection. The Catalan presence in the direction ensures that this School is also a space for representation and visibility for research and teaching of mathematics in the Catalan language and context. en activitats de projecció estatal i internacional. La presència catalana en la direcció garanteix que aquesta Escola sigui també un espai de representació i de visibilitat per a la recerca i l’ensenyament de les matemàtiques en llengua i context català.
