Maria Antònia Canals Award 2025: recognition of innovation in mathematics teaching

The Catalan-speaking societies of mathematics teachers and professors —FEEMCAT, SBM-Xeix, SEMCV Al-Khwarizmi, and SCM— have announced the verdict of the Maria Antònia Canals 2025 Award, an award that aims to keep alive the legacy of this teacher and reference in mathematics didactics, and to distinguish projects that bring creativity, innovation, and quality to learning.

Winners of the 2025 edition

The jury, meeting remotely on September 1, 2025, has awarded the following prizes.

  • Compulsory Secondary Education Category
    Prize awarded to Eva Àlvarez Vilaró
     for the work “Flowers” , an experience that combines sensitivity and mathematics.

  • University Category
    Prize awarded to  Rosa Camps, Natàlia Castellana, and Xavier Mora, for the Mathematical Modeling Workshop” of a proposal that brings students closer to research and advanced mathematical thinking.
    Special mention for Eulàlia Tramuns i Figueras, for the work “Origami and computational thinking: dividing a square into 2^n parts with minimal folds”, which unites creativity, origami, and mathematical rigor.

An award to honor Maria Antònia Canals

The award is named after Maria Antònia Canals (1930–2022), a key figure in mathematics didactics in Catalonia. Canals always defended an active, creative teaching approach at the service of students, and the award aims to pay tribute to her career and educational impact.

The verdict has been issued by a jury composed of:

  • Pedro Bibiloni Serrano i Isabel Maria Hidalgo Rangel (SBM-Xeix).

  • Lluís Bonet Juan i Ana Isabel Roig Albiol (SEMCV Al-Khwarizmi).

  • Montserrat Alsina Aubach (SCM, with voice but without vote).

  • Montse Moliné Brull (FEEMCAT, secretary with voice but without vote).
