The Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Foundation has opened the call for the 2027 Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize, an international award intended for an expository mathematical monograph presenting the latest developments in an active research area to which the applicant has made a significant contribution.
The prize is endowed with 15,000 euros and the winning monograph will be published in the Progress in Mathematics series by Birkhäuser.
The deadline for submitting candidacies ends on November 27, 2026, at 1:00 PM (GMT+1).
Who can apply for the 2027 Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize?
The call is aimed at expository mathematical monographs presenting the latest developments in an active research area to which the applicant has made an important contribution.
According to the rules of the 2027 edition, the monograph must be original, unpublished, and cannot have been previously submitted to any publishing commitment.
The work must be written in English and have a minimum length of 150 pages in ISO A4 format. In exceptional cases, manuscripts written in other languages may also be considered.

In addition to the economic recognition, the winning monograph will be published in the Progress in Mathematics series by Birkhäuser, according to the usual copyright and authorship conditions of the series.
The winning monograph of the 2027 edition will be announced in Barcelona during the month of April 2027.
How to submit a candidacy?
Candidacies must be submitted electronically using the form provided for the call. At the time of application, the monograph must be attached as a PDF file.

A long history of recognition for mathematical research
The Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize has an extensive history and, throughout its editions, has recognized works by researchers linked to universities and research centers around the world.
Among the most recent awardees are Ferran Cedó, from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and Leandro Vendramin, from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, awarded in 2025 for Groups, Radical Rings and the Yang-Baxter Equation: A Combinatorial Approach to Solutions.
In 2024, the award went to Antonio Córdoba, from the Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT), for Suprematism in Harmonic Analysis. The 2023 edition distinguished Xavier Fernández-Real and Xavier Ros-Oton for Integro-Differential Elliptic Equations.
The 2026 edition was left unassigned.
With the 2027 call, the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Foundation continues to promote mathematical research and the dissemination of advances produced in active areas of mathematics.
Interested individuals can consult the full rules of the call and submit their candidacy electronically until November 27, 2026.
