Barcelona City Prize in Fundamental Sciences and Mathematics awarded to Xavier Tolsa
Xavier Tolsa has been distinguished with the Barcelona City Prize in Fundamental Sciences and Mathematics, one of the most prestigious awards given annually by the’Barcelona City Council to recognize excellence in various fields of culture, science, and education. This award is part of the Barcelona City Prizes, which are convened with the aim of rewarding creation, research, and quality production carried out in Barcelona or by individuals or institutions with a significant connection to the city. The prize has 19 categories, and the verdict was published on January 30. The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, February 11.
The jury particularly valued the work “Carleson’s Conjecture in Higher Dimensions”, published in the journal Inventiones Mathematicae (2025), which represents a fundamental contribution to mathematical analysis. This work culminates a long research project that innovatively integrates geometric measure theory, ,’classical analysis and the partial differential equations, with potential implications for problems of high scientific interest.
The Barcelona City Prizes are awards with a consolidated trajectory and a prize package that includes a monetary amount, a diploma, and a commemorative object, chosen by an expert jury in each award area. In addition to Tolsa, over the decades other researchers and academics linked to scientific disciplines have been recognized in previous editions, reflecting the rich diversity and quality of science in the city. In 2024, Marcel Guàrdia (UB) received a mention.
Xavier Tolsa is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, an ICREA researcher, and a member of the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica. His scientific career includes international recognitions such as the Salem Prize, the Prize of the European Mathematical Society, the King James I Prize and the National Julio Rey Pastor Prize. Additionally, he has been invited to international conferences and leads impactful research projects in harmonic analysis and measure theory. His trajectory has recently been recognized with his selection as a plenary speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians, the most important meeting in the world in this field, where four other members of the SCM have also been invited.
