Terence Tao and AI, protagonists of the closing of the EMS Lecture Series on Mathematics Education

Terence Tao closes the series of lectures on mathematics education organized by the EMS this Friday, June 12

This Friday, June 12, the European Mathematical Society (EMS) will close the international series of lectures on mathematics education for 2026 with a special guest: Terence Tao, considered one of the most influential and renowned mathematicians in the world.

The lecture, titled How should students control their AI diet?, will be held at 7:00 PM (CEST) and can be watched live for free via the EMS YouTube channel. Interested individuals can submit questions before or during the session.

Winner of the Fields Medal in 2006, Terence Tao is a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and has made fundamental contributions to diverse fields such as mathematical analysis, number theory, combinatorics, and partial differential equations.

In recent years, Tao has also become one of the most prominent voices in reflecting on the impact of artificial intelligence on mathematical research and learning. His lecture at the EMS will focus precisely on how students can use AI tools intelligently and in a balanced way.

His visit to Barcelona in September 2024, invited by the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM), already revolved around these issues. In the annual CRM colloquium, titled Machine Assisted Proofs, he analyzed how artificial intelligence, machine learning, and assisted proof tools are transforming the way mathematics is done and opening new perspectives for collaboration between humans and machines.

In this lecture, he will address one of the major challenges posed by the expansion of artificial intelligence: how students can use these tools intelligently and in a balanced way, harnessing their potential without sacrificing the development of their own reasoning and learning abilities.

A series that will remain as a reference resource

Tao's lecture concludes the first edition of the’EMS Lecture Series on Mathematics Education, an initiative that has brought together top international specialists over the past months to reflect on key issues in mathematics education.

Topics covered include fundamental mathematical skills, cognition and learning, the meaning of school mathematics, difficulties in mathematics, and the teaching of algebra, among others.

All sessions have been recorded and remain available online, thus constituting a valuable collection of resources for teachers, trainers, researchers, and anyone interested in improving mathematics education.

More information, access to the live session, and recordings of all lectures at the European Mathematical Society website.
