On March 21, 2024, thousands of students will enjoy doing mathematics in the Kangaroo Test in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and the Valencian Community.
A Catalonia, registration for the 2024 Kangaroo Test has increased compared to 2023 and reaches nearly 1,100 primary and secondary schools, so it is expected to exceed the figure of 120,000 participants.
For the Kangaroo for «older students,» high school and vocational training, the idea of a «math festival» remains alive, with which the Kangaroo Test began in our region. Students from various schools gather to celebrate the activity together, this year in twenty-four venues spread across all Catalan public universities, secondary schools, or civic centers.
The university venue with the most participants is the School of Industrial, Aerospace and Audiovisual Engineering of Terrassa (ESEIAAT), where more than five hundred contestants will gather, out of a total of over a thousand who do so at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. There will be more than four hundred at the University of Lleida, three hundred fifty at Pompeu Fabra University, around two hundred at the other universities: Rovira i Virgili University, University of Girona, Autonomous University of Barcelona, and University of Barcelona.
In the Valencian Community this math contest will also be enjoyed, with the participation of Valencian universities and the Mathematical Education Society of the Valencian Community al-Khwārizmī (SEMCV). 230 centers will participate, with over 10,000 students registered. Of these, nearly 7,000 will travel to the university venues. The Polytechnic University of Valencia will receive about four thousand students at its campuses in Valencia, Alcoi, and Gandia. Jaume I University, the University of Valencia, and the University of Alicante will also each receive 1,000.
A The Balearic Islands have 150 centers participating and nearly 15,000 students: more than 12,000 in Mallorca, about 1,500 in Menorca, and around a thousand between Ibiza and Formentera.
Everything suggests that the 2024 Kangaroo Test will be a new success for promoting a creative way of seeing mathematics, which is very important in the current context.
Closing
The award ceremonies for the Kangaroo Test will take place later. In Catalonia, it will be held on May 27, in the afternoon, at the AXA Auditorium of L'Illa Diagonal in Barcelona. In the Valencian Community, it will take place on May 23, at the Paranymph of Jaume I University, with the tradition of awarding prizes rotating among each of the university venues.
On the other hand, the Kangaroo Commission is already starting to prepare the proposals that will be discussed at the international meeting in Brazil in October 2024 to develop the statements for the 2025 Kangaroo Test.
