The prestigious 2025 Abel Prize has been awarded to Japanese mathematician Masaki Kashiwara, professor emeritus at the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS) of Kyoto University. This award, considered the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics,” recognizes his fundamental contributions to algebraic analysis and representation theory, especially in the development of the theory of D-modules and the discovery of crystal bases.
A pioneer in algebraic analysis
Born in 1947 in Japan, Masaki Kashiwara he was a student of Mikio Sato, the founder of algebraic analysis. Building on his work, he laid the foundations of the theory of D-modules, a tool that has revolutionized mathematics and had a major impact on fields such as algebraic geometry and representation theory.
His contributions have helped structure the intersection between algebra and analysis, opening new paths in the study of differential equations and their relationship with geometric objects.
First Japanese mathematician to receive the Abel Prize
With this award, Masaki Kashiwara becomes the first Japanese mathematician to win the 2025 Abel Prize, thus consolidating his influence in the field of modern mathematics. The prize, endowed with 7.5 million Norwegian kroner (approximately 660,000 euros), will be officially presented at a ceremony in Oslo on May 20, 2025.
