On the occasion of the celebration of International Day of Women in Mathematics, the exhibition of the collection #YoungCatalanMathematicians is in the cloister of the Institute of Catalan Studies for a few weeks.
You can discover the profiles of 30 young mathematicians who tell us what they do, what they would like to do, and what inspires them. You can discover a great diversity.
The cloister is open to the public, except when events requiring restricted access are held. No guided tours are planned, but if you are interested in visiting with a school group, contact the secretariat of the Catalan Society of Mathematics (scm@iec.cat) to confirm the schedule. We will also provide you with a brochure of activities that can be done independently.
New call to join the collection:
We want to encourage young Catalan mathematicians to join the collection.
Share your profile by answering the form and be a role model for those around you.
Motivation
We believe that creating close and real role models of women in mathematics is fundamental for several reasons. First, it serves as a way to correct historical bias and recognize the true diversity of talents and perspectives in the field. Additionally, it provides role models for future generations, especially for girls and young people, promoting inclusion and gender equity in mathematics and science in general.
Origin and previous exhibitions
This exhibition was born exactly 1 year ago, on May 12, 2023, with the aim of showing society a group of young Catalan mathematicians, as well as their professions and passions.
It has been exhibited at the Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics of the UPC, the Faculty of Sciences of the UAB, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the UB.
The collection was the focus of workshops at Plaça del Pi in Barcelona on March 14, International Day of Mathematics, where it premiered in a modular format along with a workshop aimed at 1st-year ESO students from that neighborhood. The modular version was also exhibited on April 13 at the closing of 7demates, at the UPC in Manresa.
The SCM joined the party organized by the Museum of Mathematics of Catalonia (MMACA) on Sunday, May 5, to celebrate International Day of Women in Mathematics and School Day of Mathematics on the street, at Parc de Can Mercader.
Itinerancy
Soon you will also be able to discover it throughout the territory, because the SCM also wants to promote territorial equity.
Stay tuned for upcoming news that will announce its location in:
- Lleida regions, in collaboration with the University of Lleida
- Southern regions, in collaboration with the University Ronira i Virgili
- Central Catalonia regions, in collaboration with the 3PiBeta group
Also these weeks it is being exhibited at high schools in Terrassa, Hospitalet... And it is being finalized with the University of Girona.
