Statement from the SCM Board
The SCM Board expresses solidarity with the Ukrainian people and with our Ukrainian mathematician colleagues.
The extreme gravity of the situation in Ukraine caused by the Russian invasion compels us to ask the International Mathematical Union (IMU) not to hold the International Congress of Mathematics 2022 (ICM2022) in Saint Petersburg.
We thus join the various requests to the IMU made by other mathematical societies around the world (AMS, EMS, among others) expressing their consternation and concern that the ICM2022 be held under these circumstances. The IMU issued a statement yesterday regarding this (IMU Statement).
Likewise, being aware of the effort involved in organizing a congress of this nature as well as the scientific expectations it generates, we wish to express our support for the various scientific committees and organizers of ICM2022.
