Last Friday we sent to the Ministry, as the Catalan Society of Mathematics, the attached document with allegations to the Ministry's Draft Order regarding the study plans leading to the official university degrees that qualify for the profession of Teacher in Early Childhood Education and Teacher in Primary Education.
We are proud that the document was prepared by an interuniversity working group, promoted by the board of the Catalan Society of Mathematics, in which representatives from all departments of Didactics of Mathematics, and the departments and faculties of Mathematics of all Catalan public universities have participated. You can see the list at the end of the document.
Beyond the allegations, we want to highlight:
- the consensus and communication established between the university departments of Mathematics and those of Didactics of Mathematics, which we believe is happening for the first time.
- the reflections set out in the preamble, such as: “education must be seen as a continuous process, beginning with early childhood, and continuing with primary and secondary education, with the possibility of continuity in cycles, baccalaureate and university, without neglecting lifelong learning”, “Language is fundamental: for thinking, speaking and living, and also for communicating with the rest of the world. In this sense, mathematics is a universal language for understanding how the world works”.
We are convinced that ensuring a good education in Mathematics for everyone (theme of the International Day of Mathematics 2023) is a fundamental step towards achieving a society better prepared to face current and future challenges.
