Cangur Cup – Operation

OPERATION OF THE ACTIVITY

Characteristics of the activity's development:

  • Each team consists of 7 students from 1st and 2nd year of ESO (Cadet category) or 7 students from 3rd and 4th year of ESO (Junior category), with the condition that there can be a maximum of 4 students from the higher grade (2nd or 4th, depending on the category).
  • Each team receives paper copies of the problem statements to work on solving them and does not interact with the computer software. One team member brings the “paper” answers to the competition jury, who enters them into the computer.
  • All teams start with the same number of points, designed to avoid negative scores. Each team can make as many attempts as they want for each problem until they solve it, but each failed attempt deducts points. Each team chooses a joker problem to double the points, which applies whether points are added or subtracted.
  • The scoring of problems is dynamic. Initially, all problems are worth the same (regardless of whether they are easier or more difficult). A problem's value increases every minute that passes without any team answering it correctly, and for each incorrect answer. The first team to answer it correctly gets as many points as the problem's value, which from then on is fixed for the remaining teams, plus a bonus; the second and third also receive a bonus.
  • At the end of the allotted time for the contest, naturally the team with the most points wins.
  • For good operation, it is convenient to have a good number of problems, and some quite difficult ones, to maintain variable scores, which adds excitement.

This game design makes the participating students quickly establish game strategies and task distribution, and think and debate the proposed problems with great interest.

SOFTWARE

ACQUISITION OF THE CANGUR CUP SOFTWARE (OPTIONAL)

If any center is interested in acquiring the software used to run the Cangur Cup, we provide the details below.

The Cangur Cup software has been developed by an Italian company (www.cimidas.com).

To make it easier for interested centers to acquire it, considering the company's instructions and the difficulty of some procedures for obtaining invoices for international transfers, since September 2016, the SCM agreed that Isotropic, which provides logistical support for the Cangur Cup contest, can act as an intermediary.

The software does not require any installation conditions, works on any computer with Windows, Mac, or Linux, and the instructions are clear. However, if necessary, you can contact the SCM's Cangur Cup committee (copacangur@gmail.com) and we can help you understand how it works. Once you have used it a couple of times, it is not too complicated. You can use it as a classroom tool to create math contests or contests for any subject. The committee members can confirm that students enjoy this activity!

The price is €91.5 plus VAT, but Isotropic has negotiated a discount and you can purchase it for €65 (VAT included). Below are the detailed step-by-step instructions.
