On Monday, September 15, 2025, at 6:00 PM, a round table dedicated to the figure of Maria Assumpció Català i Poch, Catalan mathematician and astronomer, will take place in the Pere i Joan Coromines Hall of the’Institute for Catalan Studies (c. del Carme, 47, Barcelona). The event is part of the commemorative activities of the Maria Assumpció Català i Poch Year, declared by the Government of Catalonia on the occasion of the centenary of her birth.
Maria Assumpció Català was the first woman to earn a doctorate in mathematics at the Universitat de Barcelona and the first to hold a professional astronomer position at a university in Spain. She was an active member of the Catalan Society of Mathematics and the Catalan Society for the History of Science and Technology. The award for the best doctoral thesis in mathematics granted by the Section of Sciences and Technology of the IEC bears her name.
The round table will be moderated by Carme Jordi Nebot, member of the IEC, and will feature interventions by Gerard Gómez Muntané (UB and SCM), Roser Puig Aguilar (UB and SCHCT), Salvador José Ribas Rubio (Montsec Astronomical Park and SCF), and Ramon Català Pou, representing the family. The event will conclude with an intervention by Sònia Guerra López, president of the Catalan Women's Institute.
