From classical graph theory to the analysis of large networks
The talk will be given by Juanjo Rué, who won the SCM Albert Dou Prize for mathematical outreach in the call for the Sant Jordi Awards of the IEC 2023, with a work that bore this same title. Juanjo Rué He is a professor at the UPC, affiliated with the CRM; he has written books and has given talks on mathematical outreach.
On the same day, there will be a meeting with representatives of mathematical entities and associations to share topics of interest and proposals to address them.
Summary of the talk:
Currently, graph theory plays a fundamental role both in pure mathematics and in its applications in many branches of knowledge. In this talk, we will explore the evolution of the research area from its birth, passing through the great discoveries of the discipline, especially those related to the notion of randomness.
Our journey will end by discussing some of the current trends in the theory, which seek to incorporate the notion of the discrete (inherent to graph theory) into the
realm of continuous mathematics with the aim of addressing, among other great challenges, the systematic study of the large networks existing in the real world.
