Title: Why mathematicians should care about European PISA results?
Organized jointly by EMS and SCM Education Committees
Abstract: PISA has become one of the main instruments for comparing the mathematical performance of 15-year-olds internationally. Recent results and longer-term trends raise important questions about mathematics education in Europe: What exactly do these assessments tell us? How should we interpret differences and trends across countries? And why should mathematicians themselves be concerned with these developments?
Nuno Crato is Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Lisbon and former Minister of Education and Science of Portugal, and former president of the Portuguese Mathematical Society. He has worked extensively on the analysis of international assessments such as PISA and TIMSS and on the relationship between curriculum, educational policy and student achievement.
The lecture will be followed by an opportunity for discussion with
Nuno Crato, Ann Dooms and Jaume Franch.
