Next Thursday, March 13, Meike Akveld, president of the’Association Kangourou sans Frontières (AKSF), will visit the’Institute of Catalan Studies(IEC) in Barcelona. Her presence represents a great opportunity to strengthen ties between the Catalan mathematical community and this European network.
A bridge between mathematical societies
The’AKSF brings together mathematical societies from across Europe with the aim of promoting research, outreach, and cooperation. The organization actively works to connect institutions, support educational and scientific initiatives, and promote events that highlight the importance of mathematics in society.
Meike Akveld: mathematics as a fundamental tool
In a recent interview with the Barcelona City Council, Meike Akveld she highlighted the essential role of mathematics in our daily lives:
“Modern life is unthinkable without mathematics. If you want to be part of this world and shape it, you need a certain level of mathematical understanding.”
From her role as a professor at’ETH Zurich to her work leading Kangourou sans Frontières, the organization responsible for the popular Kangaroo Mathematics Contest, Akveld has worked to make mathematics more accessible and appealing. She firmly believes that mathematics is not just a theoretical discipline, but an essential tool for technology and science.
“Mathematics is everywhere: in smartphones, the internet, artificial intelligence… And to understand it, you need mathematics.”
Agenda of Meike Akveld's visit to Barcelona
During her stay in Barcelona, Meike Akveld she will meet with representatives of the Catalan Society of Mathematics and other institutions to learn about current initiatives and explore possible collaborations.
On March 14, coinciding with the International Day of Mathematics, she will give the lecture “Why do we need to celebrate mathematics?” at the Saló de Cent of the Barcelona City Council. This day, recognized by UNESCO, commemorates the importance of mathematics in society, coinciding with Pi Day (3/14).
According to Akveld:
“The world faces difficult challenges, and we need the next generation to solve some of them. To do so, they must see the relevance of mathematics from an early age.”
