Activities for International Day of Mathematics 2025

This March, mathematics takes center stage in a series of activities across Catalonia, coinciding with the celebration of International Day of Mathematics and the 30th edition of Cangur Contest. Among conferences, workshops, and exhibitions, we highlight the events organized by Catalan Society of Mathematics (SCM) and other entities.

Wednesday, March 13

  • 5:00 PM – Institutional event for International Day of Mathematics
    Where? Saló de Cent, Barcelona City Hall.
    Guest: Meike Akveld, president of the’International Association Kangourou sans Frontières (AKSF).
    Co-organized with the’Barcelona City Council.
  • 5:00 PM – Talk «Mathematics or the art of modeling ideas»
    Where? Jaume Fuster Library (Gràcia).

Thursday, March 14 – International Day of Mathematics:

  • 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM – Screening and discussion of the documentary «Counted Out»
    Where? Cosmocaixa
    Host: David Virgili (UPC, Escola Galí-Bellesguard)
    Sessions: 10:00 AM (for schools, by reservation) and 6:00 PM (general public, free with reservation)
    Organized by Cosmocaixa in collaboration with the Catalan Society of Mathematics. 
  • 11:00 AM – Unveiling of a symbolic mathematical plaque
    Where? Plaça del Pi, Barcelona.
    Guest: Xavier Ros Oton (ICREA, UB, CRM).

  • 5:00 PM – Math problems and puzzles contest
    Where? Vil·la Urània Civic Center (Sarrià-Sant Gervasi).
  • Workshop «Mathematical programming» (ages 9 to 12)
    Where? Zona Nord – Mària Sánchez Library (Nou Barris).

Friday, March 15

A month full of mathematics

In addition to these featured activities, throughout the month of March the cycle «Mathematics and Art» will be held at various libraries in the city. This set of activities aims to bring mathematics closer to society from a playful, visual, and creative perspective, demonstrating that solving mathematical problems is an art in itself.
