SCM participates with two workshops to showcase creativity and research
On the weekend of May 31 and June 1, the Ciutadella Park in Barcelona was filled with science, curiosity, and outreach with a new edition of the Science Festival, organized by the Barcelona City Council. The Catalan Society of Mathematics (SCM) actively participated with two workshops designed to experience mathematics from a creative, accessible, and participatory perspective.
Workshop 1: Mathematics, art, and creativity – 30 years of Kangaroo challenges
Saturday, May 31, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM – Space 04 – The Art of Science:
This workshop aimed to highlight the fundamental role of creativity in solving mathematical problems, taking as a starting point the 30 years of the Kangaroo Test in Catalonia. Participating families were able to solve challenges together, discuss strategies, and enjoy a space where shared learning was the focus.
The activity involved the collaboration of volunteer students from the mathematics degree and the teaching master's program, and also included an audiovisual display linking mathematics with circus and art, through videos by the duo Blanca & Guim.
Workshop 2: Small mathematical challenges, big ideas
Saturday, May 31, from 6:10 PM to 8:00 PM – Space 06 – Mathematical challenges:
This second workshop offered a space for playful solving of mathematical challenges in small groups, facilitated by expert volunteers. One of the standout activities was ‘Where are the mathematics?’, which invited participants to discover mathematical concepts hidden in an exhibition of totems: artificial intelligence, traffic simulators, health improvement, and the fundamental role of women in mathematics.
