Call for the last quarter of 2024.

Given that it was born as a training activity for the Olympiad, this contest is now called «Olitele», for high school students (although exceptionally, ESO or vocational training students may participate if recommended by a teacher at the school).

CURRENT EDITION INFORMATION

The SCM organized, for the 18th consecutive year, an online problem-solving activity aimed at students in the final years of secondary school. The activity took place during the months of November and December, with the final submission of «explanation problems» already in January 2025.


Contest prizes

On the proposal of the contest jury, after analyzing individual scores in comparison with other contestants and other aspects of the contest, the SCM has agreed to award three first prizes and four second prizes.

We are pleased to publish the list of best scores and send the entire group a very effusive congratulations from the organizing team of the technical part and, especially, from the teachers who formed part of the jury for problems 7, 10, and 11. The maximum score was 48 points, but, as provided in the rules, in some cases, indicated with (*), an additional tenth was awarded on the 7-point valuation to highlight the special merit of the explanation received. The score for the concrete answer problems (out of 27) and the explanation problems (out of 21) is indicated separately in parentheses.

This list has been submitted to the Catalan Society of Mathematics, and the contest prizes will be announced shortly.

We reiterate the congratulations already expressed earlier. We want to place special emphasis on the fact that, since ESO students have exceptionally been allowed to participate in the contest, if a teacher has advised them to do so, this circumstance is noted in the list, especially regarding Roger Cabanilles, a 2nd year ESO student whom we warmly congratulate.

 


In the 18th Olitele, a total of 12 problems have been posed, which can award a maximum score of 48 points, but it has happened that the jury considered in problems 7 and 10 that some contestants deserved «A prize» of one-tenth of a point to acknowledge their extremely valuable explanation.

  • In 9 of these problems, with different scores (of 2, 3, or 4 points, with a total of 27 points) a specific answer will be required. The corresponding form evaluates whether the answer is correct or not. In case of error, a second attempt can be made.
  • The three problems that complete the 12 of the contest are defined as «explanation problems». A reasoning is required that leads to the solution, detailed with the greatest possible precision. The contest jury will score the received responses out of 7 points, and therefore these three problems overall can give a maximum of 21 points, with the possibility of awarding one or two tenths «as a prize» to responses considered very valuable.

With two wires of 2024 cm length each, two wires of 2025 cm length each, and two wires of 2026 cm length each, a tetrahedron is constructed so that the six edges are tangent to a sphere. Explain in what relative position we have placed the edges.

Some statistical data

There have been 110 valid registrations distributed by school levels as follows: 18 from second year of high school, 51 from first year of high school, 32 from 4th year of ESO, 7 from 3rd year of ESO, and 2 from 2nd year of ESO.

  • Problem 0: 87 contestants sent the correct answer on their first attempt and another 12 on the second attempt; 3 failed the second attempt, and 8 did not send a second attempt.
  • Problem 1: Responses from 90 contestants have been recorded. 57 sent the correct answer on the first attempt and 18 on the second attempt; 11 failed the second attempt and 4 did not send a second attempt.
  • Problem 2: Responses from 71 contestants have been recorded. 28 sent the correct answer on the first attempt and 3 on the second attempt; 8 failed the second attempt and 6 did not send it.
  • Problem 3: Responses from 45 contestants have been recorded. 26 sent the correct answer on the first attempt and 9 on the second attempt; 26 failed the second attempt and 10 did not send it.
  • Problem 4: Responses from 42 contestants have been recorded. 31 sent the correct answer on the first attempt and 5 on the second attempt; 4 failed the second attempt and 3 did not send it.
  • Problem 5.  There are 44 responses, 30 correct on the first attempt; 11 correct on the second attempt; 2 second attempts wrong; 1 does not answer the second attempt.
  • Problem 6. There are 40 responses, 27 correct on the first attempt; 8 correct on the second attempt; 4 second attempts wrong; 1 does not answer the second attempt.
  • Problem 8. There are 14 contestants who obtained 4 points and 4 who obtained 3 points. The breakdown by sections is as follows:
    • Section a). There are 29 responses, 20 correct on the first attempt; 3 correct on the second attempt; 5 second attempts wrong; 1 does not answer the second attempt.
    • Section b). There are 28 responses, 16 correct on the first attempt; 6 correct on the second attempt; 4 second attempts wrong; 2 do not answer the second attempt.
  • Problem 9. There are 18 contestants who obtained 4 points; one with an assigned score of 3.75; and two who obtained 3 points. The breakdown by sections is as follows:
    • Section a). There are 28 responses, 20 correct on the first attempt; 5 correct on the second attempt; 3 second attempts wrong.
    • Section b). There are 27 responses, 20 correct on the first attempt; one contestant has an assigned score of 1.75; one contestant correct on the second attempt; 3 second attempts wrong; 2 do not answer the second attempt.

 


Overall score for the concrete answer problems:

  • Five contestants with the maximum of 27 points; three with 26 points; two with 25; two with 24.
  • Ten other contestants with 20 points or more.

«Explanation» problems»

In each of the explanation problems, a team of 4 faculty members (active or retired), a different team in each case, evaluated them out of 7 points, and the score awarded is the result of rounding up to the first decimal the average of the four received scores.

  • Of problem 7 30 responses have been received.
    • The average of the 30 scores is 5.2. Excellent! A «Very good» for the group of participants! It has already been mentioned that these scores should be valued not as if it were schoolwork but within the context of a contest.
    • Considering what is said in the considerations about «the explanation problems» for three contestants, a 7.1 was awarded. Congratulations.
    • There are seven other contestants with a score between 6.5 and 7.0, and eight from 5.5 to 6 points. Also very, very good.
    • There are still six more contestants with a score between 3.5 and 5.
  • Of Problem 10 17 responses have been received.
    • The average of the 17 scores is 6.2. Exceptionally good!!!
    • In this problem  four contestants were awarded a 7.1. A very special congratulations!
    • There are seven other contestants with a score of 7.0 points. Naturally, very, very good.
    • There are four more contestants with a score above 6 points.
  • Of problem 11 19 responses were received.
    • The average score is 5.2.
    • There are four contestants with a score of 7.0 points. Good job!
    • Next are five more contestants with a score above 6 points.
    • We also mention another five contestants with a score of 5.3 points or more. Very good!

All these data are what led the jury to request that the  «Very, very good» be valued for the group of participants
