Clara Torres-Latorre, new member of the EMS Young Academy

The young mathematician Clara Torres-Latorre has been selected to join the EMS Young Academy (EMYA), the academy of young researchers of the European Mathematical Society (EMS), for the period 2027-2030.

Her candidacy, submitted by the SCM and other entities, was chosen from among those presented by mathematical institutions and societies from across Europe, representative of the various branches of mathematics.

Clara Torres-Latorre obtained her PhD in mathematics at the University of Barcelona in 2024, under the supervision of Xavier Ros-Oton. Her research focuses on partial differential equations, especially regularity theory and free boundary problems. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT).

In 2025 she received one of the Vicent Caselles awards, granted by the Real Sociedad Matemática Española and the BBVA Foundation, in recognition of her contributions to mathematical research.

From the Catalan Mathematical Society we congratulate her on this selection, which recognises her scientific career and will allow her to contribute actively to the initiatives and the future of the European mathematical community.

The EMS Young Academy: the voice of the new generations

The EMS Young Academy, created in 2022, aims to promote the active participation of young researchers in the European mathematical community, foster international collaboration and incorporate their perspectives into the activities and decisions of the European Mathematical Society.

EMYA members help to drive initiatives aimed at the new generations of mathematicians and take part in reflection on the future of research and of the European mathematical community.

The SCM has had a continuous presence in this initiative since its creation, with several members selected in the different calls:

  • 2023-2026: Guillem Blanco, then a researcher at KU Leuven (University of Leuven) and currently at the University of Barcelona, is part of the first EMYA cohort.
  • 2024-2027: Robert Cardona Aguilar, of the University of Barcelona, and Xavier Fernandez-Real, of EPFL in Lausanne.
  • 2025-2028: Carles Falco i Gandia, of the University of Oxford, and Roser Homs Pons, of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.
  • 2026-2029: Mar Giralt, of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.

With the incorporation of Clara Torres-Latorre into the 2027-2030 cohort, this presence of young mathematicians linked to the SCM is consolidated in a body that helps to define the future of the European mathematical community.

Collaboration between EMYA and the SCM at the Barcelona Mathematical Days 2026

This connection has also become evident in the fifth edition of the Barcelona Mathematical Days 2026, the SCM's triennial international congress, held from 7 to 9 October at the Institute of Catalan Studies.

Within the framework of the congress, on 7 October a special session dedicated to researchers in the early stages of their academic careers was held, organised jointly by EMYA and the SCM.

The session included a presentation of EMYA's objectives and activities, a special hybrid-format edition of the Mathematics Online Seminar Series (MOSS), featuring Elba Garcia-Failde, of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, and an informal round table on the different stages, opportunities and challenges of the academic career of young researchers in mathematics.

This joint initiative offered a space for meeting and exchanging experiences and helped to strengthen the ties between the new generations of the Catalan and European mathematical community.
