Saint Petersburg will host the next International Congress of Mathematicians in 2022
At the meeting of the GA (General Assembly) of the IMU (International Mathematical Union) on July 29 and 30, 2018, Saint Petersburg's bid was chosen to organize the next ICM (International Congress of Mathematics) in 2022. For the first time (although some voices say this is not the case...), the GA had to vote to choose between two bids: Saint Petersburg and Paris. The IMU executive committee had selected Saint Petersburg as the «best» bid, but the Paris bid decided to present itself anyway so that the GA could vote between the two bids. The result was 83 votes for Saint Petersburg and 65 for Paris. The Chair of ICM2022 will be Stanislav Smirnov.
