For weeks, scientists around the world have refined calculations to determine whether asteroid Y4R will impact Earth during Christmas dinner in 2032. The latest estimates say no, but\u2026 can we trust them? And what if the movements of asteroids were, in fact, undecidable?<\/p>\n<p>Alan Turing, the mathematician who cracked the Enigma code and changed the course of World War II, also proved that there are questions no computer can ever answer. His proof of the undecidability of the halting problem established the birth of theoretical computer science and revealed the limits of computation and prediction.<\/p>\n<p>But what do 29,000 rubber ducks adrift have to do with all this? In 1992, a container with thousands of rubber ducks fell into the sea, and since then, they have appeared in unexpected places. If we know all the equations of motion, why can't we know where they will end up?<\/p>\n<p>Secret codes, oceanic chaos, and out-of-control asteroids: this journey takes us from mathematical certainty to the limits of prediction. Where does calculation end and chaos begin? And what if, as Turing proved, there are questions that will never have an answer?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Eva<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Miranda <\/em><\/strong><em>is a mathematician, professor, and researcher <\/em><em>at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), affiliated with the Centre de Recerca Matem\u00e0tica. Eva Miranda was born in Reus and grew up in Lleida, where she attended the Dominiques school (FEDAC) and the Institut Marius Torres. She studied Mathematics at the University of Barcelona and was also an associate professor at the University of Lleida. She currently resides in Sant Cugat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Her innovative contributions have redefined the understanding of several interconnected fields, building bridges between geometry, fluid dynamics, computer science, and mathematical physics. She is an ICREA Academia researcher (2016, 2021) and directs the Laboratory of Geometry and Dynamical Systems, as well as the GEOMVAP group. Recently, she co-founded the SYMCREA excellence unit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Her work has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards. In 2025, she was appointed Nachdiplom Lecturer at ETH Zurich and Gauss Professor at the Nieders\u00e4chsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu G\u00f6ttingen. In 2024, she received the STEM Woman Award, and in 2023, she was named Hardy Lecturer by the London Mathematical Society, which involved a lecture tour across the United Kingdom. In 2022, she received the Fran\u00e7ois Deruyts Prize from the Acad\u00e9mie Royale de Belgique and the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation. She has also been an invited speaker at the 8th European Congress of Mathematics, a plenary speaker at the Netherlands Mathematical Congress (2023), and organized the international conference Fluid Dynamics, Geometry and Computer Science in Interaction at the CRM Barcelona, sharing the stage with Terence Tao, a mathematical genius and one of the world's most renowned mathematicians.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>She has organized numerous prestigious conferences and events to inspire, guide, and showcase the unique contributions of women in STEM, such as the Workshop on Women in Geometry and Topology in 2019. She has also been a keynote speaker at Connections for Women in San Francisco (USA) and participated in roundtables such as Women in Science at BCNspiracy (2018), Potencia tu Talento STEM at UB (2019), and the Day of Women and Science at IEC (2019). She has contributed writings such as Faces of Women in Mathematics (2018) and has been interviewed in various media.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Beyond research, she is an active advocate for equality in science and participates in initiatives to promote female presence in mathematics, such as the Workshop on Women in Geometry and Topology (2019) and the \u201cConnections for Women\u201d series at MSRI in San Francisco. She is also committed to outreach initiatives to popularize mathematics and finds time to actively participate in activities aimed at young people, such as the Catalan Women's Mathematical Olympiad, jointly organized by the SCM and the universities UPC, UAB, and UB, which attracted over a hundred talented girls.
