L&#8217;any 1966 va rebre la medella Field (juntament amb els matem\u00e0tics Paul J. Cohen, Alexander Grothendieck i Stephen Smale) per la prova del Teorema de l&#8217;Index per operadors el\u00b7liptics sobre varietats complexes i les contribucions a teoremes de punt fix.
