Atiyah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Michael Francis Atiyah<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Professor Michael Francis Atiyah, Fields Medalist in 1966, passed away on January 11, 2019. <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Professor Michael F. Atiyah, an Englishman born in Hampstead in 1929 of Lebanese origin, was a distinguished mathematician throughout his very long professional career. In 1966, he received the Fields Medal (along with mathematicians Paul J. Cohen, Alexander Grothendieck, and Stephen Smale) for the proof of the Index Theorem for elliptic operators on complex manifolds and contributions to fixed point theorems.
