The Sprint Problems for 3rd and 4th Year of ESO<\/strong>, held last December 10, 2025<\/strong>, have achieved a record participation<\/strong>, with 194 teams from 143 educational centers<\/strong> in Catalonia, the Valencian Community, and the Balearic Islands, and a total of 3,560 participating students<\/strong>. This edition consolidates the activity as one of the most relevant collaborative problem-solving experiences in the school mathematics calendar.<\/p>\n

The Sprint Problems are a mathematical activity organized by the Catalan Society of Mathematics (SCM)<\/strong>, with the collaboration of the FEEMCAT<\/strong> and supported by the Department of Education<\/strong>, through CREAMAT<\/strong>. The activity began in 2000, coinciding with the World Year of Mathematics, as an online proposal linked to the closing of the Kangaroo test, with the aim of fostering cooperative work and shared reasoning among students.<\/p>\n

Notable results of the edition<\/h3>\n

The data from this edition highlight the high level of involvement and accuracy of the participating teams. 49 teams have correctly solved all the contest problems<\/strong>, while 52 more teams have correctly solved the first eight challenges<\/strong>, among which several teams made up exclusively of 3rd-year ESO students stand out, who have expressed their satisfaction with the results achieved.<\/p>\n

Regarding resolution time, some teams have completed the contest in less than an hour<\/strong>, such as\u2019Institut Manuel de Pedrolo<\/strong> (T\u00e0rrega),\u2019Institut Arquitecte Manuel Raspall<\/strong> (Cardedeu), and\u2019Institut Samuel Gili Gaya<\/strong> (Lleida). Teams from centers in Barcelona, Manresa, l\u2019Escala, Arenys de Munt, and Palma have also achieved very notable results, successfully completing the contest in a time equal to or less than forty-five minutes.<\/p>\n

Among the centers that have achieved a perfect score on all ten problems<\/strong>, notable ones (in order of registration) include:\u2019Institut Mart\u00ed Pous<\/strong> (Barcelona),\u2019Institut Dom\u00e8nec Perramon<\/strong> (Arenys de Munt),\u2019Institut Vidreres<\/strong> (Vidreres), and\u2019Institut La Sedeta<\/strong> (Barcelona), the latter with two teams.<\/p>\n

The Sprint Problems for 3rd and 4th Year of ESO as a mathematical popular race<\/h3>\n

The organizing committee wishes to emphasize that the Sprint Problems for 3rd and 4th Year of ESO are increasingly understood as a popular problem-solving race<\/strong>, where the main objective is not speed, but successfully reaching the end of the course through reasoning, debate, and teamwork<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

. The activity is designed so that teams, made up of students gathered in a classroom, work in groups and subgroups, share ideas and results, and collaborate to solve the proposed challenges. This structure allows for different didactic approaches and adapts to the reality of each center, while maintaining the cooperative spirit as a central element.<\/p>\n

Pedagogical considerations and use of digital tools<\/h3>\n

In the context of the current debate on artificial intelligence, the organization reminds that the Sprint Problems for 3rd and 4th Year of ESO aim to promote students' own mathematical reasoning<\/strong> and the exchange of ideas within the team, under the supervision of the teaching staff. The use of tools that do not align with this approach is not part of the spirit of the activity.<\/p>\n

Messages received from many participating centers highlight that the students experienced the activity as a profitable and motivating time, in which mathematics becomes a shared, reflective, and stimulating activity.<\/p>\n

Continuity of the activity<\/h3>\n

The Problems at the Sprint for 3rd and 4th of ESO are part of the four annual calls<\/strong> of the contest, which also include sessions for 5th and 6th of primary, 1st and 2nd of ESO and high school. This continuity allows many centers to integrate the activity into their usual teaching program.<\/p>\n
