The Catalan Society of Mathematics (SCM) held the first session of the program this Saturday in Manresa Ambassadors of Mathematics<\/strong>, a pioneering initiative aimed at fostering scientific vocations among girls and creating a network of female role models in the STEM<\/strong>. field. The meeting brought together around forty secondary and high school students from across Catalonia, who spent the entire day solving problems, sharing experiences, and discovering ways to encourage interest in mathematics among younger generations.<\/p>\n

An SCM initiative to strengthen female presence in mathematics<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The project, promoted and coordinated by the SCM<\/strong>, has a clear goal: to reduce gender bias in scientific disciplines and offer students a space where they can share their passion for mathematics with confidence and without stereotypes.
The president of the Catalan Society of Mathematics, Montserrat Alsina<\/strong>, emphasizes that this action has a direct impact on early educational stages:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIt is essential that girls do not develop a fear of mathematics in primary school. We need to eliminate biases at the root and create an ecosystem of mentors and role models that shows them that mathematics is a language that empowers and opens doors.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

With this first meeting, the SCM launches an ongoing program that will turn participants into ambassadors<\/strong> at their schools, especially in primary schools, to help normalize the presence of women in studies of mathematics, physics, technology, and engineering.<\/p>\n

A full day of mathematics, mentorship, and community<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The meeting, held between the UPC Manresa<\/strong> and the Museum of Water and Textiles<\/strong>, served to unite the group of students who will be part of the program this academic year. At 9:30 a.m., the participants were already starting the first activities, still shy, but by the end of the day they left with new friendships and a clear sense of belonging.<\/p>\n

The activities included:<\/p>\n

    Mathematics problem-solving workshops<\/strong>, with challenges inspired by the Kangaroo tests and the Mathematical Olympiad, coordinated by SCM members.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Activities linked to the programs 7 de Mates<\/em> i Anem x + matem\u00e0tiques<\/em>, which complement the work of fostering mathematical talent that the Catalan Society of Mathematics promotes in the region.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    A mentoring session with two STEM role models: Andrea<\/strong>, a data scientist in biosciences, and Ainoa<\/strong>, a researcher in mathematical models of temporal evolution applied to climatology, fluid dynamics, and astronomy.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    A mathematical escape room<\/strong> at the Museum of Water and Textiles, which served to close the day with collaboration and ingenuity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Throughout the day, students were able to share doubts, motivations, and expectations about their scientific future. Many of them agreed on the importance of the reasoning process and the path to solving problems\u2014a perspective that, they acknowledge, often does not appear in the classroom.<\/p>\n

    Women and STEM: why action is needed from the ground up<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    The SCM focuses on one of the most important challenges of the education system: the low percentage of girls who choose scientific and technological paths<\/strong>. The meeting allowed for hearing testimonies that confirm the need to create safe, stimulating, and stereotype-free spaces.<\/p>\n

    Many participants shared common experiences:<\/p>\n

      feeling alone in highly masculinized environments,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      receiving less recognition than their male peers,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      or being labeled for excelling in mathematics.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The program Ambassadors of Mathematics<\/em> aims to counteract this reality by offering support, visibility, and community. As Alsina recalls:<\/p>\n

      \n

      \u201cTalent has no gender: it only needs opportunities, spaces, and role models.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

      Institutional support<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      The closing ceremony was attended by Saray Espejo<\/strong>, Director General of Equality and Feminisms; Isabel S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>, Councilor for Feminisms and LGTBI, Childhood and Youth of Manresa; and Jos\u00e9 Miguel Gim\u00e9nez<\/strong>, Director of UPC Manresa. All three highlighted the value of the initiative and the need to continue working to reduce the STEM gap.<\/p>\n

      A first stone to build a community of mathematical role models<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      With this first edition, the Catalan Society of Mathematics consolidates a program that will combine training, mentoring, mathematical activities, and outreach actions in educational centers.
      The goal: to empower young women, promote scientific vocations, and normalize the female presence in mathematics and the STEM universe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      Registrations for the School of History of Mathematics 2025 are now open Ambassadors of Mathematics<\/em> begin their journey. And the SCM will accompany them at every step.<\/p>\n
