The 11th edition of the RSME BBVA Foundation Awards 2025<\/strong> was held this week at the Palacio del Marqu\u00e9s de Salamanca in Madrid. The awards, jointly granted by the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME)<\/strong> and the BBVA Foundation<\/strong>, annually recognize excellence in research and continued contribution to the development of mathematics.<\/p>\n During the ceremony, the Vicent Caselles Awards<\/strong>, the Jos\u00e9 Luis Rubio de Francia Award<\/strong> and the RSME Medals<\/strong>, were presented, distinguishing different stages of the research career. Both the event and the speeches highlighted the value of basic research as a pillar of scientific and social progress.<\/p>\n Barcelona-born mathematician Guillem Blanco Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong>, currently a professor at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC)<\/strong>, has received the Jos\u00e9 Luis Rubio de Francia Award<\/strong> award as part of the RSME BBVA Foundation Awards 2025<\/strong>. The recognition, aimed at researchers under 32, is endowed with a start-up grant<\/em> of 35,000 euros<\/strong> to develop a three-year research project.<\/p>\n A graduate and PhD in Mathematics from the UPC, Blanco works in D-module theory and algebraic singularities<\/strong>. Among his achievements is the resolution of the Yano conjecture<\/strong>, published in Inventiones Mathematicae<\/em> (2021).<\/p>\n \u201cIt is essential to research pure mathematics, as it is impossible to foresee which tools will be key for future technologies\u201d<\/em>, Blanco explains.<\/p>\n From Brussels, where he was a postdoctoral fellow at KU Leuven<\/strong>, he defends the need for a society educated in mathematical knowledge: \u201cThere are more and more mathematicians providing a critical and analytical perspective in projects across all fields.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n In addition to Blanco, other awardees with ties to Catalonia include Ra\u00fal Alonso Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong> (former student at the UPC) and Clara Torres Latorre<\/strong> (ICMAT, trained at the UB and the UPC).<\/p>\n The jury of the Vicent Caselles Awards<\/strong> included the participation of Professor Joan El\u00edas i Garc\u00eda<\/strong>, from the University of Barcelona, representing the Catalan mathematical community.<\/p>\n In her speech, the president of the RSME, Victoria Otero<\/strong>, emphasized that mathematics \u201care at the heart of social welfare, the economy, and new technologies.\u201d.
