We will explain their usefulness, beyond mathematics, in fields as diverse as sociology or biology. We will also see how they provide new perspectives on classical results in mathematics, such as Cayley's formula. Finally, we will discuss random walks and see their relationship with Pagerank, the algorithm used by Google to prioritize web pages, and power laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guillem Perarnau is a professor and researcher at the Department of Mathematics of the UPC, and an affiliated professor at the CRM. His research focuses on probabilistic combinatorics and random discrete structures, with an emphasis on the algorithmic side. He is currently the head of studies for the Degree in Data Science and Engineering at the UPC.
