The best-known games are non-cooperative games where each agent independently chooses their strategy, knowing that their outcome will also depend on the choices made by other agents. There are also cooperative games where agents do not act independently but coordinate to achieve greater efficiency, and then expect to share the gains fairly. More recently, game theory has led to mechanism design, which approaches the problem in reverse: an institution starts from the desired outcome and designs a game so that when agents play it freely and independently, they reach the desired result. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marina N\u00fa\u00f1ez holds a PhD in mathematics and is a researcher in the Department of Economic, Financial and Actuarial Mathematics at the University of Barcelona, where she is currently the director.
