Or where to go on vacation? At some point, you may have simply flipped a coin to let it decide for you. In reality, we have known for a long time that the result of flipping a coin is not really a matter of luck. The randomness in the toss is introduced by the lack of skill of the humans flipping it: the result is random because those who flip it never do it the same way twice. Small differences in the angle of the toss, or the force with which it is thrown, make each toss different, and therefore the result unpredictable. In this talk, we will explore how important results in probability and statistics are based exclusively on sequences of heads and tails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alejandra Caba\u00f1a is a professor and researcher in the Department of Mathematics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Her research interests include mathematical statistics, goodness of fit, empirical processes, statistical inference for stochastic processes, and she is also interested in aspects of time series modeling. Recently, she has become interested in aspects of explainability of machine learning models.
